The book of Nehemiah ends on a bit of a downer. After all the work of rebuilding and lots of great leadership lessons for us 21st century folks, the prophetic hope of renewal and transformation given by Jeremiah is no where near complete. The book of Nehemiah ends with frustration and spiritual apathy because at their core the people's hearts remained unchanged. The prophetic hope was always based in the promise of stoney hearts removed, replaced with hearts of flesh empowered by a new Spirit within. We know this was only accomplished through God's one and only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. This message unpacks the prophetic hope surrounding the end of Nehemiah and points us to the eternal hope found in Christ through the Gospel.
